Choosing the right proxy type is only half the decision. For the same job, sending every request out a fresh IP versus holding one IP for a stretch of time can produce opposite results: one breaks your login mid-flow, the other trips the site’s anomaly detection by changing identity too fast.
The lever that decides it is your session strategy — rotate, or go sticky.
One favors distribution, the other continuity. Neither is “better” — it depends on which the job needs.
Sticky sessions live and die by one setting: session duration (idle timeout) — how long the same IP stays assigned.
The rule is to make it just long enough to cover one complete action. If login → add-to-cart → checkout runs a few minutes, set the window to wrap those minutes — longer isn’t safer. The exact default and maximum are configurable per plan; confirm the range in your Thordata dashboard rather than assuming a number.
Rotation has its own cadence too: rotate per request (most distributed), rotate on a timer (balances stability), or rotate only on failure (most conservative).
This trips people up — you can’t always flip between modes.
| Job | Strategy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| High-volume public scraping | Per-request or short-timer rotation | Spreads load, maximizes throughput |
| SERP / SEO rank tracking | Rotate, keep sticky very short | Avoids same-IP bursts that trigger CAPTCHAs |
| E-commerce price & stock monitoring | Sticky, pinned to the target region | Reproduces the same listing, stops price jitter |
| Logins, carts, multi-step flows | Sticky, timed to cover the whole flow | A mid-flow IP change breaks state |
| Multi-account social | One fixed exit per account | Never share an exit — one flag implicates all |
| Ad verification | Fixed exit to the market, low rotation | Keeps the viewpoint reproducible |
Related: price monitoring, SERP monitoring, ad verification; for rotation-heavy collection, see Rotating Proxies.
Ask: does this job need the same identity or login held within one session?
Still torn? Revisit the scenario table and find your row.
Is rotating always better than sticky? No. Rotation wins on distribution and throughput; sticky wins on stable identity. Pick wrong and you either drop a session or invite avoidable blocks.
How long should a session last? Just long enough to cover one complete action — work backward from real flow time. Don’t default to “as long as possible.”
Can datacenter proxies rotate? Usually they’re fixed (naturally sticky), but they can be pooled for rotation depending on your plan.
Is a static residential proxy the same as sticky? Its IP stays fixed, so it behaves like long-term sticky — but “fixed IP” and “one exit within a session” are conceptually different.
Set rotation or sticky from the one-question test above, then start a free trial: run the same target under different session strategies and compare success rate and data consistency before you scale. Choosing the proxy type itself is a separate call — see Which Proxy Type Should You Use? A Scenario-Based Comparison.
